Stem Cell Core Facility

Human pluripotent stem cells form an integral part of translational, systems medicine research. Their use enables us to close the gap between the process of identifying disease-causing molecules and cellular mechanisms and the development of suitable treatments. One of their most important areas of use is in the development of patient-specific disease models.

The Stem Cell Core Facility has sites at both Charité and the MDC. First launched by the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) in 2014, the facility aims to support basic research and clinically oriented research by providing technologies which enable the use of human pluripotent stem cells (hPSC). In addition to the harvesting, isolation, differentiation and supply of human iPS cell lines, the facility also provides researchers with suitable infrastructure.

Services on offer include:

  • Isolation of primary cells from patient material
  • Reprogramming of cells into induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSC)
  • Characterization and quality control of hPSCs
  • Genome editing (CRISPR)
  • hiPSC reference cell lines and banking
  • Development of differentiation protocols and supply of hiPSC-differentiated cells
  • Organoid technologies
  • Provision of infrastructure and devices
  • Provision of reagents such as special media and viral/non-viral vectors
  • Provision of standardized protocols
  • Project-specific advice and training

  • Fully equipped S1 and S2 cell culture laboratories
  • Picking hoods with heated surface and integrated microscope
  • Hypoxia chambers
  • Phase contrast, stereo and fluorescence microscopes
  • FACS Sorter (MACSQuant Tyto, Miltenyi)
  • FACS Analyzer (MACSQuant VYB, Miltenyi)
  • RT-PCR (QuantStudio 6)
  • Pipetting robot (Gilson PIPETMAX 268)
  • Transfection (Amaxa, Neon)
  • 3D cell imager (Cell3imager)
  • Single cell dispensing machine (CellenONE und IsoCell)
  • Single Cell Controller for RNA sequencing (10X Genomics)
