Biobanks are repositories for human biological materials. They store human biological materials such as blood, DNA, urine, cerebrospinal fluid and tissues alongside personal information on their donors. Biobanks enable researchers to study diseases as well as the (usually molecular) changes which underlie their clinical features. They provide an opportunity to develop more targeted treatments and support a general move towards increasingly personalized medicine.

Charité's Central Biomaterial Bank (ZeBanC), a Core Facility jointly run by Charité and the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH), has the capacity to accept several million samples. In addition to collecting and processing biological samples such as tissues, blood and cerebrospinal fluid, ZeBanC also stores these samples (and their derivatives) at temperatures as low as -196°C (-320°F). These samples and any relevant medical information pertaining to them can then be provided to research studies (both internal and external) which aim to improve the prevention and early diagnosis of diseases or develop better diagnostic techniques and treatments. ZeBanC's processes and procedures comply with the requirements of EN ISO 9001:2015.

ZeBanC is subject to stringent quality standards and offers the following services:

  • Acquisition and processing of biological samples
  • Storage of biological samples and their derivates at a range of temperatures (room temperatures as low as -196°C)
  • Recording of sample- and donor-specific data in a database (CentraXX; Kairos GmbH)
  • Advice and support on project planning and prospective collections/studies
  • Incorporation of retrospective collections of biological materials (including data)
  • Availability of the biobank's database structure for internal use within Charité (role- and client-specific)
  • Processing, preparation and characterization of biological samples for research projects

  • State-of-the-art biobank facility with the capacity to store several million samples at a range of temperatures
  • Automated ultra-low temperature freezer operating at -80°C
  • Automated N2 freezer
  • DNA/RNA extraction system
  • Scanner for virtual microscopy images
  • Pipetting robots
