Methods and Techniques

The extensive spectrum of diagnostic methods used at the Department of Neuropathology ranges from conventional histological and zytomophological analyses to the latest methods in molecular testing. We offer specifically:

• Immuno- and enzymhistochemistry
• Ultrastructural analysis (electron microscopy)
• Fiber teasing of peripheral nerves
• Molecular techniques, especially:
  • Analysis of chromosome segments 1p and 19q with regard to loss of heterozygosity (LOH) in gliomas, notably oligodendrogliomas (decisive for prognosis and therapy options)
  • Analysis of the MGMT promoter methylation status in gliomas, especially in glioblastomas (decisive for prognosis and therapy options)
  • Detection of specific muscle proteins via the Western blot technique in skeletal muscle samples, offering a more detailed analysis and determination of quality and quantity of muscle proteins
