Effects of 2,3,7,8-TCDD on the Thymus and Other Components of the Immune System

Drug - and Immunotoxicology

Topic:

The thymus is an important target organ of the toxicity of 2,3,7,8-tetrachloro-dibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) and related compounds (other polyhalogenated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans as well as several PCBs). However, numerous aspects of the immunotoxic effects of these xenobiotics are still unclear (e.g. the question of the mechanisms of action and primary cellular alterations or interspecies differences). On the other hand, the immunotoxic effects of these substances range among those effects that can be observed already after low doses and on which risk assessments for man are based to an increasing extent.

Current topics of our investigations: We were able to show that specific alterations can be induced by TCDD on thymic epithelial cells from man as demonstrated by flow cytometry using antibodies directed against subtypes of human thymic epithelium. (Oberemm et al. 2005, Nottebrock et al. 2006).
