Today's medical research stems from a variety of networks that receive significant funding from external sources (third-party funding).

In addition to 189,8 million Euros Berlin state subsidy for Research and Teaching in 2009, the Charité received more than 126 million Euros in third-party funding:

- 30,5 Mio. € Federal Ministry of Education and Research

- 37,1 Mio. € German Research Foundation

- 11,4 Mio. € various foundations

- 32,5 Mio. € Industry/donations

- 6,7 Mio. € European Union

- 1,8 Mio. € State of Berlin

- 6,9 Mio. € others

More than 50% of the Berlin state subsidy for Research and Teaching are granted on a competitive basis [based on past performance].
