Diagnostic Laboratory and Preventive Medicine (CC 5)

Facilities of Charité Center 5

The CharitéCenter for Diagnostic Laboratory and Preventive Medicine (CC5) is responsible for the medical diagnostics of our patients.  Besides classical laboratory diagnostics, we also offer modern analytical procedures – both to the medical staff of the Charité and to outside physicians.  All important, urgent analyses are performed around the clock in our emergency laboratories.  In going with the tradition of Robert Koch (who in 1885 was the first director of the “Institute of Hygiene of the University of Berlin”), our microbiologists and virologists track down pathogens and make sure that the highest quality standards for hygiene are observed at our hospital.

Researchers in the Departments of Pathology and Forensic Medicine, with the aid of microtissue analysis, examine the broad spectrum of correlations between crime and the psyche up to the reconstruction of disease course and cause of death.  They, too, stand in the tradition of Rudolf Virchow, who was appointed to the first chair of pathology at the University of Berlin in 1856.

The Center consists of nine institutes spread over three campuses of the Charité.
