Charité Center 2 for Basic Medicine comprises ten institutes encompassing the fields of anatomy, medical physics, biophysics, biochemistry and physiology. In addition, there are two interdisciplinary centers: The Center for Physiology incorporates the three Institutes of Physiology, including the Center for Space Medicine at Campus Benjamin Franklin and the Institute of Neurophysiology and Vegetative Physiology at Campus Mitte. The
Center for Anatomy at Campus Mitte comprises the Institutes of Integrative Neuroanatomy with Electron Microscopy and Molecular Neuroanatomy and the Institutes of Cell Biology and Neurobiology as well as Vegetative Anatomy.
Apart from research, teaching is a primary goal of the Center: here Charité students complete the first four semesters of their basic studies. The Center does nearly 40 percent of the teaching and about ten percent of the research at the Charité. It employs around 500 staff members together with third-party-funded personnel.
