International PhD Symposium
In order to foster multidisciplinarity as much as the researchers skills to present findings and to critique peers, all admitted fellows meet once a year in the form of an international symposium. This training activity takes the fellows out of their groups and teaches them related yet different ways of looking at similar problems. Fellows experience the need to synthesize and present their own findings as well as critiquing others in peer review. Communication and organizational skills are trained as well, since the researchers need to organize the event themselves, with administrative support by the program coordination office.
Most importantly, the symposium functions as a progress control mechanism. Student talks and posters have to be prepared in close cooperation with their project supervisors and have to clearly lay out the state of their work. These presentations will be held before members of the steering committee.
