Eligibility Criteria

Early Stage Researcher means that applicants...

...must have obtained a degree that allows for direct entry into doctoral studies in the country where the degree was issued. (Note: Local prerequisites at each partner institution must be met as well)

...must have less than four years experience in research from the time of getting above mentioned degree.

...must not have earned a PhD degree yet.

Transnational mobility means that...

...applicants must move country when joining cortex:

      • EU and associated states’ citizens need to move to another country.
      • Applicants must have spent less than 12 months of the last 3 years in the country of the project they are applying to.


... cortex fellows will spend a period of 6 months each at 2 other partners.

...EU and associated states’ citizens who have been outside their own country for more than 4 of the last 5 years can take up a project in their home country.

...third country citizens (not from EU and associated states) can join cortex under the following conditions:

      • all together, they can not take up more than 30% of the PhD fellowships (i.e. there is a maximum of 4 non-EU and associated country citizens within the project)
      • have they been residing at one of the cortex countries for more than 12 months of the last 3 years, they need to move country

        ...special rules apply to dual citizens.
