Topic (1) Influence of Telemedicine on Decisionmaking in Medicine, Study Field Cystic Fibrosis (Mucoviscidosis). The goal is the development, establishment and evaluation of a low-cost, low-end telemedicine-system for tele-medical consults through the internet like the International Medical Electronic Link (IMEL) between Dartmouth and Nepal. Later an international network between sites at Dartmouth Medical School (U.S.), St. Petersburg (Russia), Katmandu (Nepal), Timbuktu (Mali) and sites in Peru and Equador should be established and connected to other similar systems like the KMEL in New-England. (2) Virtual Reality in Surgery: We aim to develop and evaluate a surgical simulator for training, distance-learning, telesurgery and image-guidance during planing and performance of the surgical intervention featuring force-feedback and 3D-visualisation. |

Reactions to the U.S. Experience This year is worth any effort it may seem to take. Professionalism is a different task over here. The education is very intensive (you can take calls every third night and the physicians teach you a great deal). I have also had a great time here spending time with very interesting people at a nice facility in the mountains of New Hampshire. You should not to be scared by a rural setting because you can enjoy your time over here in a very beautiful area. This place gives you a never-ending number of opportunities. Use them! |

Difficulties Encountered Getting my VISUM on time, making it back to Hanover, NH, and having my car break down a couple of times. But with the technical help of another BMEP-student and of several mechanics throughout New-England, I always made it (although I spent a hell lot of money on repairs!) |

Hints for Future Students Try to get your IAP-66 as soon as possible, and take a class in basic car repairs before coming to the U.S.! If you are planning to come to Dartmouth, there is a great list of places to rent on the internet at the College's web-site. The winter is cold and long over here. You will not survive without a car here as there is no reliable public transport and distances between the facilities are long. Boston, New York, and especially Montreal, are only 2-4 hours away by car and definitely worth visiting. |
