Research Topic
Relationship between chronic infection with Chlamydia pneumoniae and atherosclerosis. In detail I worked with PCR to proof the presence of Chlamydia pneumoniae in patients with chronic sinusitis and in Bronchoalveolar washings from patients with asthma. Bronchoalveolar washings were also examined by cell culture. Furthermore I tried to clone a Chlamydia pneumoniae surface protein and to express it with the goal of producing antibodies. Finally there is a antibiotic drug study going on.
Personal Reactions to the U.S. Experience
This is an experience I would not want to have missed. It's great to meet and to work with all kinds of people from all over the world. Especially I have enjoyed the time I have spent with international students.
Greatest Difficulties Encountered
Housing: When you arrive the American students already have come back from their summer vacation and settled down so it is very difficult to find housing under appropriate conditions. Laundry: There is no way to keep you white clothes white, at least not when you put them into an American washing machine, you shrink and stain your clothes and the detergent stays in the fabric. Banking: Don't try to compare it with German banking, and never bounce a check.
Helpful Hints for Future Students
Bring A LOT of money for housing with you. And check the Internet for cheap flights: I usually buy at http://www.traveloverland.de. I also suggest bringing little gifts from Germany for everyone you meet.
