Research Topic
Effects of hydrogen peroxide on intracellular calcium homeostasis and myosin light chain phosphorylation in tracheal smooth muscle. The so-called WARNER-LAB of Anesthesia Research works in the field of intracellular calcium regulation and calcium-contraction-coupling in smooth muscle. My work consists of two different projects: The first is the characterization of changes in calcium homeostasis in smooth muscle cells induced by hydrogen peroxide and different radical species, using high speed laser scanning confocal microscopy. In the second project I try to look at radical induced changes in the myosin light chain phosphorylation-force-relationship, using force measurements and Western-blotting.
Greatest Difficulties Encountered
To get started with my work without loosing too much time. I saw the time elapsing and realized that the plans I had could not be successfully carried out in the given time. The advantages of spending your time in a small town like Rochester, where the Clinic is the center of life, are an easy-to-organize life, cheap housing and other costs. The disadvantages are a lack of entertainment and the typical smalltown atmosphere, where, after a while, you realize that you always meet the same people at parties, because there are only a few (not parties but people).
Most humorous incident
Taking the drivers exam again. Of course, what else could have been more exciting?
