Topic The role of NPY as an angiogenic factor. Establishing a rat model for peripheral arterial occlusive disease -according to our special possibilities- we are trying to determine the role of NPY in supporting collateral growth and new vessel formation in ischemic limbs. The methods range from physiological assessments as blood flow and systolic blood pressure over immunohistological staining to western blots and RT-PCR. We expect this to draw a general picture of the way NPY is involved in ischemia-induced angiogenesis. |

| Personal
Reactions to the U.S. Experience It is pleasant to stay here, but I wouldn't want to live here, although Washington is not very different from Europe. Usually the people are kind, but they are sometimes a bit ignorant. I expected things to be a bit more stressed out, but this may depend on the congenial attitude in our lab. |

Difficulties Encountered To become familiar with the various opportunities to save money, since one cannot afford to live here without those skills. Another challenge was learning Chinese-English. |

| Most
humorous incident There were a lot, but each depended on the special situation, so they are difficult to relate. |

Hints for Future Students Do not choose your host insitution by reputation alone. Instead look for a group working in your area. Look at your literature, pick out the most appropriate group, write to them, and don't care whether they are working at Harvard or Johns Hopkins. |
