| A twenty-fifth anniversary is an important milestone in any human endeavor, and since this year marked the completion of twenty five years of our successful student exchange program, it is only fitting that we look back at our origins and our partners. Therefore this 2003-2004 BMEP Student Yearbook is dedicated to the faculty and staff of | ||

The University of Connecticut School of Medicine

| In 1979 , the concept of a relatively informal exchange of German and American students in the life sciences was formulated by three colleagues: Dr. Hilmar Stolte (Prof. of Exp. Nephrology at MHH), Dr. John Boylan (Prof. of Medicine at Univ. of CT Medical School, and Dr. Robert Massey (Dean em. School of Medicine Univ. of CT). | ||
| Over the intervening years, the association with Farmington as well as other distinguished institutions thrived and more in creating a small but flexible exchange experience for advanced students in the life sciences between Germany and the United States, they built a two way bridge that continues to contribute to international understanding as well as to scientific progress. | ||
| This program has been so productive that yet another effort has been developed integrating all former BMEP activities, known as the International Academy of Life Sciences (IALS). It aims to promote further initiatives across the disciplines of life sciences, law, management and technology by means of conferences, seminars, postgraduate training, white papers and feasibility studies. | ||
| Happily, despite the passing of Dr. Boylan and the retirement of Dr. Massey, the present administration in Farmington remains supportive. More than 1600 participants have benefited from this cooperative effort and Dr. Peter J. Deckers, Dean School of Medicine of Univ. of CT, continues to be a strong ally and we look forward to further productive interaction with our friends in Farmington. | ||
