Research Topic
1) 3D-Imaging of the temporal bone; Different types of 3D-views can be generated by postprocessing CT-data sets. The method can be used for radiologic diagnosis, teaching and surgical planning. Different computer algorithms were evaluated. The 2D-3D-correlation was quantified.
2) Intraoperative MR in Brain Tumors: Operations can be performed in this MRT allowing MRI during surgery. Due to Brain Shift when opening the skull this allows more precise navigation then preoperative data acquisition.

Personal Reactions to the U.S. Experience
Meeting a lot of different people and making new friends was a great experience.
In the end every day life in Boston isn't that different from life back home. If you don't care about the bread you can get along very nicely. Traveling to the other big cities on the East Coast was good fun, especially New York City.
Greatest Difficulties Encountered
Getting my visa in time (Philipp and I picked it up in Berlin the night before taking the flight to Boston about 8 hours later).
Finding a room at a reasonable price is difficult in Boston.
Most humorous incident
When I wanted to go down to New York City for New Year no flights or busses were going for the whole day due to a snow storm. Taking the train, I understood why some people of the railroad company wondered if you could overload a train.
Helpful Hints for Future Students
Try to get your IAP in time and contact former BMEP students who have been to the same city. Consider going somewhere where it's warm during the winter.
