Reactions to the U.S. Experience Doing research at NIH is an incredible experience. Everything seems to be possible, and if there is something you cannot buy there is usually someone in a lab next door who has the things you need. I would like to thank my mentors and my coworkers who gave me the freedom to do my own projects and helped me develop my ideas. The amount of time everybody in the lab spent discussing my experiments and explaining new techniques to me was amazing. |

Difficulties Encountered My health insurance. I bought a package from MLP, which they told me was especially designed for medical students going to the US. However, in the NIH insurance office they told me that the certificate does not meet the formal requirements of the J1 Visa Program and despite numerous e-mails and phone calls I was not able to get an appropriate certification from MLP. |

humorous incident After waiting for over 5 weeks for my Christmas present from home the dog was faster than I was. When it finally arrived she unwrapped it carefully and ate all my Domino Stones. |

Hints for Future Students Although it is helpful to have a car in Bethesda and DC, you will not necessarily need one. If you plan to work at NIH, look for an apartment in Bethesda or Rockville near to a metro station and rent a car if you want to get around. A good address for a place to stay is the NIH housing web site www.recgov.org/.housing/housing.html. Make sure your insurance company signs a letter with the exact numbers from the pink form of the Fogarty International Center - please contact me for further information. |
