Research Topic
Characterization of small conductance potassium (SK)-channels, namely SK1 and SK2, by using electrophysiological methods. I express the channels in mammalian cell lines and after transfection measure the currents of the channels in those cells.

Personal Reactions to the U.S. Experience
Oregon is a state full of natural diversity - and Portland is right in the middle of it. It is only a 1-hour drive to get to the coast, to the mountains (these days skiing at Mount Hood or Mount Bachelor is recommended!) or to the desert. San Francisco, Seattle and Vancouver, BC (Canada) are close-by, and of course Crater Lake, one of the seven world wonders, is a must-see. My friends and I spent all our leisure time in traveling around the Northwest - it is such a nice change from the work in the lab, very relaxing and sooo … much fun!
Greatest Difficulties Encountered
Getting a cell phone without having to pay the obligatory $1000 deposit because of not having a credit history in the US!
Most humorous incident
For my birthday, my lab surprised me with a lunch at a restaurant - with a birthday cake as dessert. I tried to blow out the candles for about 5 minutes and nearly passed out, totally red-faced. As I was attempting so hard to blow the candles out, I didn't notice that, (a) everybody else was cracking up, laughing furiously, (b) the candles sparkled whenever I thought I had blown them out, and (c) the cake was covered by a distinct layer of black ash. It was hours later (back in the lab), that somebody had the mercy to tell me that they had put trick candles on the cake.
Helpful Hints for Future Students
Use the Internet to find a room in a dorm. It is a very convenient way to handle this most important part of your stay.
