Personal Reactions to the U.S. Experience
A journey abroad has many general benefits, such as the experience of being a foreigner, getting to know different ways of living (as well as finding similarities in daily life to that of one's own country). One of the most impressive experiences I have had was to see the cultural diversity in the US, and how people of varying backgrounds manage to live and work together.
Greatest Difficulties Encountered
Making Americans understanding that Europeans are not automatically gay.
Most humorous incident
Sharing a flat with two Americans and Guido Woolman … oops, sorry Wollmann, of course, and recognizing that he is absolutely the living opposite of me was a humorous incident in itself. Nevertheless, I didn't quit smoking. Anyway, we had a lot of fun, especially dressing up for Halloween, cooking for Thanksgiving, jogging to East Rock Park on Sunday morning, freezing on Brooklyn Bridge on New Year's Eve, watching movies together with Ben and Jerry, having fun with our roommates, etc …
Helpful Hints for Future Students
Be aware of the fact that New Haven is not New Heaven in terms of going out. So, choose another city or try to make the best out of your stay: Enjoy the Yale Medical School Cinema, take a metro ride to New York, become a member of the Payne Whitney Gym, eat Clarks ice-cream as much as you can, go to GPSCY on Halloween, watch an ice-hockey game, rent a car to enjoy the Indian Summer, or go to the lab.
