Personal Reactions to the U.S. Experience
I experienced my time at the Obesity Research Center in New York as a gift. I am very grateful for the opportunity to spend some time in New York and I feel particularly lucky with my choice of host institution. I as very well taken care of by my mentor and my co-workers. They instructed me very thoroughly and with a great deal of patience. They enabled me to work rather independently and encouraged my ideas. I participated in different projects and therefore gained an insight into the whole process of scientific investigation and publication, including its downsides.
However, what was even more important to me was the variety of interesting and interested people around me. I hope to be able to stay in touch and keep my memories of them.
Greatest Difficulties Encountered
Without doubt trying to make arrangements for housing etc., while I was still in Germany was the most difficult part. Even during the first weeks in New York I had to struggle with bureaucracy, but everything turned out well.
Most humorous incident
Unfortunately, I don't remember a single incident that would be funny for others to read, but I certainly laughed a lot.
Helpful Hints for Future Students
I think it will be most helpful for future students to contact former participants in order to get precise information on institutes, housing, banking, etc. I will be glad to share any information on general arrangements, preparing for a stay in New York, in particular. Please don't hesitate to contact me!
