Study Program: Soft-Skill Courses

The following soft-skill courses are offered within the graduate school on a regular basis:

Poster Design Workshop

Knowing how to design a well-structured, visually attractive poster is a must for every researcher. However, due to insufficient know-how and inexperience, many young researchers fail to get their message across and also perform badly when presenting their poster. To overcome these problems, this workshop focuses on the key do's and don'ts of strong poster design using the participants' own posters as material. In addition, participants are coached on how to effectively deliver their message as well as on how to make the best impression on interested parties. This workshop will therefore enable young researchers not only to design and present a poster competently but also to represent their Institute more professionally.

Presentation Techniques Workshop

The presentation techniques workshop provided participants with the tools they needed to enhance their communication effectiveness, and thereby increase their self-confidence and presentation delivery. This workshop focussed on how to develop a strong title, clear structure and use of key presentation signaling devices. Additionally, each participant's visual aids were analyzed to optimize their design and impact.

Getting Funded Workshop

The Getting Funded Workshop is designed to provide young scientists with the tools they need in order to apply successfully for their own research fellowship or to write a reseaerch proposal.

Scientific Writing Workshop

The Scientific Writing Workshop provides participants with the tools they need to produce a well-written, clear and concise research paper. The workshop focuses on how to develop effective writing skills by maximizing structure, developing stylistic tools, and recognizing and eliminating weak writing. The workshop covers structuring the paper, providing transition, depth and emphasis as well as being concise, clear and fluid. It also reviews punctuation, American versus British English and strong verb use. Additionally, there is an emphasis on improving critical reading skills when revising texts as well as implementing methods for maintaining motivation.
